Being a Bolognesi
Generally speaking, I find a lot of personal blogs to be self-indulgent and often times conceited.
The best blogs that I read are written by either incredibly interesting people, highly-skilled writers, or a experts in a subject area. Considering I don't find myself much more interesting than my (future) classmates, an above average writer and certainly no subject matter expert, I am breaking my own rules by even having this blog.
Essentially, I often times feel like Janis Ian when I read other people's personal blogs, which usually exist to show how "awesome" the blog's purveyor is while they soak up their own awesomeness.
But I broke these rules for a few reasons: to continually practice my writing, to update the people who truly care about what I am doing (which is why you wont see much from me on facebook), and so my mom knows that I am still alive.
Another very important reason why I started this is so I can share my (relatively) unfiltered thoughts and experiences without appearing conceited. Opinions on the usage of facebook differ, but I feel that the content I wish to share is best suited for a more private setting such as this blog instead of the relatively public facebook setting.
Here you will find thoughts on my experiences, but nothing too deep. Considering that my stint in Bologna will be hectic, expect this to be sparsely updated.
Also, please don't expect this to be an error free blog. I enjoy well-written and well-edited pieces of writing, but if I misspell a word on here, misuse a comma, split infinitives, end a sentence in a preposition or make any other mistakes, I frankly don't care all that much as long as my writing is clear. Of course I will try to make this as perfect as possible, but I'm not looking for a Pulitzer, I am just trying to maintain contact with friends.
Being the purveyor of my own site means I can do whatever I want, which is a great luxury for a writer being that we are usually at the mercy of an editor. Throughout my posts, I will likely include a, "Point of Personal Privilege, or PoPP." This is a phrase heard when elected officials take the floor to talk about whatever they want to talk about. Considering many of my posts will be meandering, when you see, PoPP, it is an indication that I want to include something that is only tangentially connected to what I am talking about.
If you got an invite through a third party, please don't be offended. I either didn't have your contact info and told other invitees to send it to you, or I genuinely didn't think you would be interested in reading this.
At any rate, welcome friends, because if I gave you access to this page, you are definitely a friend.
This blog is inherently counterintuitive: I want to freely share my information with a lot of people, but I don't want it to be public. Therefore, the only condition of being a member of this select community is that you do not share this link or address; It is for friends of PatrickNKelley.com only!
If you like what I write, or want to discuss anything, please email me or comment above! Also, if you'd like to receive email updates each time I post, please enter your email address above.
Please do not post any links from this blog on Facebook, Twitter or any other public forum. This blog is intended to be private -- invitees only. This will ensure writing free of inhibition, a better vessel of open communication between me and you.
